Ex-Situ Chemical Oxidation

Well-Site & Drilling Waste Disposal Area

  • Location: Wellsite/Drilling Sump – Central Alberta

  • When: 2014

  • Contaminant of Concern: BTEX, F1, F2

  • Impacted Media and Volume: >10,000 m3 impacted stockpiled soil

  • Tasks: Remedial Planning, Detail design, Procurement, Blending and Field applications

The Problem

Former drilling waste disposal area under active remediation and with limited site access. Contaminants in the soil included BTEX, F1, and F2. A total of >10,000 m3 of low to moderate PHC impacted mineral soil, up to 7,000 ppm TPH.

The Approach

EXCO process conducted on aliquots of up to 750 m3. Daily production of 300 m3. A specialized mulcher was used for the project in order to ensure the greatest contact between the oxidant and the impacted soils.

Mineral soils had a total of 500,000 Lof 25% - 50% EHP (enhanced hydrogen peroxide) applied.

The Results

  • Treatment of soils was completed in less than 3 months

  • >90% of mineral soil was remediated to below applicable guidelines

  • Mineral soils were backfilled and organic soils were left in place for further soil management
